Introduction

A student's academic writing career is incomplete without creative writing. By engaging in creative writing, students not only hone vital skills that apply to just about any discipline.

This series of creative writing prompts on descriptive writing activities can help students make a more descriptive piece of paper, use a more extensive vocabulary, use figurative language, and focus on their five senses.

Inspired Writing Prompts 

In the second grade, children begin to develop their writing skills. After second grade, students should be able to express opinions, recount stories, and give step-by-step instructions in their writing. Second-grade writing prompts leverage age-appropriate topics to inspire students' imaginations and engage them in the writing process.

Prompts for Narrative Essays

Write a narrative essay about an event or sequence of events that happened in the past or today. Details that describe thoughts, actions, or feelings should be included in their writing. Closing the narrative should provide the reader with a sense of closure.

A kind word goes a long way. Please write about a time when someone showed you kindness. Tell us what they did and how it made you feel.

The special day has come. Tell me about an occasion when you and your best friend shared something special. How did it make you feel?

Days of diapers. Relate an incident from when you were a baby or toddler.

Fun on a rainy day. You're visiting your best friend, and it's raining outside.

How do you handle the situation?

Memories of happy times. Tell the story of a happy memory.

Change the rooster. How would that feel if you could swap lives with anyone for a day? Who would you choose to confide in?

Overnight School. Let's imagine that you are stuck in your school alone overnight. Tell me what happens.

Become a fly-on-the-wall. The following day you find out that you've become a fly. What should you do?

There are right and wrong answers. When you were tempted to do a bad thing, but you decided to choose the right thing.

Stories of horror. Describe an experience that scared you.

Imagine that you are in charge of the weekly lunch menu at your school. Which meals would you include?

Quite wild and wacky. You are on a field trip to the zoo with your class when one of the animals starts talking to you. What does the animal tell you?

Opinion Essay Writing Prompts

Students in the second grade should write opinion pieces that introduce their topic and express reasons that support their opinion, connecting their reasoning with words. The conclusion should summarize the paper. Inspired writing prompts for grade 2 consist of different exercises for kids. It helps to improve their creativity by providing opportunities to exercise their brain power.

How do you like to play games? What makes them so enjoyable?

Bedtime Tales. Have your parents ever read you a bedtime story? What made it the best?

Travel Stops. While traveling with your family, which would you prefer to stay in: a tent, an RV, or a fancy hotel?

In your opinion, what is the best piece of equipment on your school's playground? What makes it so unique?

Pets from exotic locations. What wild animal would you choose as a pet if you could choose any?

Choose your study path. Your teacher has asked you to choose the next topic the class will study. Would you mind telling me why you selected that topic?

One of my favorite subjects. How about you? What's your favorite subject in school?

Yum or yuck. Write about a portion of food you like but others dislike. If they tried it, would they like it?

Time to play. Do you think your school should extend recess? Do you have a reason for it?

You can choose between digital and print. Would you prefer to read a book on a tablet or a printed book?

Are you allergic to anything? How important is it for people to know about your allergy?

Is milk your favorite beverage? Coca-Cola? Juice? Please tell us what your favorite drink is and why you like it.

How do you like to spend your free time? Describe the best day of your life in an essay.

Expository Essay Writing Prompts

An expository essay aims to inform the reader about a specific subject. Students should introduce their topic throughout the second grade and provide facts, definitions, or steps to support what they are saying.

You have a younger sibling who has not yet started school. Please describe the typical school day to them.

During the school year, each class chooses a class pet. Give a name to an animal you believe would make a good choice, and explain its needs (food, habitat, and temperature).

What is your favorite food? If no other person has ever seen or tasted it, describe it as if it has never been done before.

What is your favorite activity during a particular season, summer or fall?

Take a look at a famous first, like walking on the moon or sailing around the world for the first time. What made this first so significant?

A famous person. Write about a famous person and explain how they became famous.

One of my favorite films. Tell us about your favorite animated film and why you love it.

Explain the importance of getting plenty of sleep every night.

Tricks for your pet that are funny. Tell us what your pet can do that is unusual.

Describe the reason for or the way people celebrate a particular holiday.

Whether good or bad, every place has its own scent. Please describe two or three scents you associate with your home or school.

Research Writing Prompts

Throughout this course, students will also be required to produce research-based writing by taking notes while reading a book or recording observations of a topic, or using provided materials to answer a question.

Turtle Power. Why do turtles have shells?

Prepare a report explaining interesting facts about a dinosaur you like.

Under the Sea. Learn more about one exciting animal that lives in the ocean. Write a paper about what you learned.

Please choose a unique home (such as an igloo or a mud hut) and explain why it's suited for the environment in which it is found.

Provide five interesting facts about one of the planets in our solar system.

In a recent science lesson, you might observe how plants grow or the water cycle works.

Your current history lesson should assign you to write a report on someone you are studying.

Describe three or four interesting facts about an animal that lives in the desert.

Do insects and arachnids differ in several ways?

What part of the world are you in? Consider the state or country you want to research. You should include three to five facts about that location.

What's the difference between the two? You might find it interesting to pair up two similar animals, such as a horse and a mule, a crocodile and an alligator, or a leopard and a cheetah. Describe how they can be distinguished.

Sleeping upright is an option for some animals. The bats hang upside down while they sleep. Trees are good places for birds to rest. Explain how you sleep without falling if you are an animal, bird, or bat.
